Top 10 IPv4 to IPv6 application conversion considerations for enterprises.

One area which may create problems for enterprises wishing to deploy IPv6 is application conversion. Some conversions may be quite simple, while strategies for others will need to be carefully considered and may take time. One of our goals at Industry Network Technology Council (INTC) is to help enterprises receive the proper training needed to ensure application conversion is not a roadblock to deploying IPv6.

Tackling the Catch-22 of IPv6 enterprise uptake.

Quite a few ISPs in the Asia Pacific region have embraced IPv6. Some even have an IPv6-only backbone! On the other hand, ‘bricks-and-mortar’ enterprises (banks, insurance companies, government agencies, and so forth) have been slow to adopt IPv6. In many cases, they just don’t see the business case for it. One of the largest mobile providers in India, which had already transitioned to an IPv6 backbone, had to purchase IPv4 addresses on the open market simply to support companies that had not implemented IPv6.

IPv6 Training for Enterprises.

2019 ARIN Community Grant Program Recipient Report
The IPv6 Training for Enterprises Project provided IPv6 training to technicians from large enterprises (privately managed networks). IPv6 deployment at such networks has lagged, in part due to lack of training. Many feel that unless this issue is addressed, the Internet as a whole will stall at an IPv6 adoption rate of about 60%.
We have done a survey of large enterprises and have found that security, application conversion, and training are three of the biggest challenges enterprises reported as barriers to IPv6 adoption. The project for 2019 focused on the training needs.
Even though enterprise technicians want to get trained on IPv6, management does not want to pay for such training since they do not see a business need for adoption. This creates an unfortunate cycle where misinformation about the complexity of the IPv6 protocol and unreasonable fears about security and manageability combine with the perceived lack of urgent business needs to prevent adoption of IPv6. Our project sought to provide technical training through a series of webinars on many of the core features of IPv6.

ARIN Grant

INTC Receives IPv6 Deployment Grant from ARIN.

INTC is honored to announce that they have received a grant from the American Registry for Internet Numbers to research IPv6 security and application conversion as well as more IPv6 training.

The grant is for the following:

Enterprise IPv6 adoption has lagged. In 2019, INTC provided IPv6 training to enterprise technicians. In 2020, we propose an initial assessment of security and application conversion at large enterprises and to continue our training efforts. We hope this time to involve 5 – 10 enterprises. Additionally, we propose involving another Internet registry, APNIC, as lack of adoption of IPv6 at enterprises is a global problem. Security, application conversion and training were seen as problems in our survey of enterprises as they anticipate IPv6 migration. We will create:
An application inventory:
  • Common enterprise applications, middleware, code libraries, and other software
  • IPv6 support of the above
  • Methodology for doing an enterprise application assessment
A security inventory:
  • Common enterprise IPv4 security defense mechanisms and usage (IDS / IPS, ACLs, virus checkers, malware, etc.) categorized by topology and function (client, server, backbone network, cloud)
  • Potential new IPv6 attacks given the environment above
  • How to do IPv6 security defense given the above
  • Methodology for doing an enterprise security assessment
  • Initial assessment of enterprise security products and platforms
Training classes:
  • IPv6 Trace Reading 101
  • IPv6 Troubleshooting

Impact on Enterprises of the IPv6-Only direction for the US Federal Goverment.

This article by Nalini Elkins (President of INTC) describes the impact of the IPv6-only direction of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on the enterprises. Many “brick-and-mortar” enterprises have delayed transition to IPv6. The article delves into the reasons and impact of this.

INTC receives $20K Grant from ARIN.

Enterprise IPv6 adoption has lagged. One of the issues is that enterprise technicians don’t know how IPv6 works. The technicians want to get trained yet the management does not feel that they do not want to pay for such training because they do not see a business need for adoption. This creates an unfortunate cycle where misinformation about the complexity of the IPv6 protocol and unreasonable fears about security and manageability combine with the perceived lack of urgent business needs to prevent adoption of IPv6.

We have a multi-pronged strategy. We can provide technical training on many of the core features of IPv6. We plan a series of webinars this year. We presented one such webinar last year which was attended by over 120 people from over 70 separate enterprises including outsourcing companies, “brick-and-mortar” Fortune 500 type enterprises, small independent software companies and others.
